Fit For Nuclear (F4N)

Fit For Nuclear (F4N) is a unique service to help UK manufacturing companies get ready to bid for work in the nuclear supply chain.

Fit For Nuclear | Nuclear AMRC (namrc.co.uk)

F4N lets companies measure their operations against the standards required to supply the nuclear industry – in new build, operations and decommissioning – and take the necessary steps to close any gaps.

F4N has been developed by the Nuclear AMRC with the support of its top tier partners, including nuclear new build developers and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. These industry leaders are using F4N to identify potential companies for their own supply chains.

We continue to work with stakeholders to further develop the F4N programme and provide additional support to UK manufacturers.

Who can become F4N?
F4N covers companies which can supply mechanical engineering, control and instrumentation, electricals, and other manufactured components for nuclear plant construction and operation, as well as the specialised requirements of decommissioning.

Participating companies range from contract manufacturers with no nuclear experience aiming to take a first step into the sector, to established suppliers wanting to benchmark their position and drive business excellence.

F4N is designed for businesses with 10 or more employees or with a turnover of £1.6 million and upwards, as the principles of the programme are more difficult to apply to microenterprises. Microenterprises with the potential to offer a niche product or service to the civil nuclear sector should still get in touch to discuss how F4N can help.

If you have any questions about the F4N programme or would like an informal discussion about whether it is right for your business, contact the team at f4n@namrc.co.uk.

The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre helps UK companies win work across the nuclear sector – in new build, operations, decommissioning and technology development – and in other high-value manufacturing industries. Our facilities and services are open to all.
We are led by our industrial members, but companies don’t have to be members to take advantage of our capabilities and expertise. Our manufacturing innovation capabilities and supply chain development services are open to all UK manufacturers, from specialist SMEs to top-tier OEMs.

Our engineers and sector specialists work with companies to develop innovative techniques and optimised processes for large-scale high-precision manufacturing. You can use our state-of-the-art workshops to develop and test new processes on production-scale machines, without losing capacity in your own factory. You can commission commercial research to address your specific needs, or join collaborative R&D projects with external funding.

We also provide a range of supply chain development support to help manufacturers enter the nuclear market and compete worldwide. Our flagship Fit For Nuclear programme is a unique diagnostic tool which lets you measure your operations against industry requirements, with continuing support to help you close any gaps.

The Nuclear AMRC is backed by industry leaders and government, and owned by the University of Sheffield. Our research factory at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire forms part of a world-leading innovation cluster alongside the University of Sheffield AMRC, AMRC Training Centre and a host of high-value manufacturing companies.

Our facilities also include the new Nuclear AMRC Midlands in Derby, and our modular manufacturing R&D centre at Birchwood Park, Warrington. Our applied manufacturing research is underpinned by the nuclear and materials technology expertise of The University of Manchester Dalton Nuclear Institute.

We are part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, an alliance of seven leading manufacturing research centres backed by Innovate UK. This allows us to tap into a national network of manufacturing research excellence – if a particular technology falls outside our areas of expertise, we can call on our Catapult partners for the support you need for your challenge.
